Fallout

(Asha Sharma).

Fallout: New Vegas.

The Outer Worlds 2.

When I heard about new RPG from Obsidian several years ago I thought "Cool, I love New Vegas just as I love any other Fallout game". So, I bought this game and DLCs "for the future". Now I finally tried it. And it's quite disappointing. I always play Fallout games on the hardest difficulty. And even used J. Sawyer's own hardcore mod for New Vegas once. I chose supernova difficulty, naturally. Played around 10 hours and already am quite pissed with the game. And didn't even finish the start location. What I liked so far:* Picturesque views. I don't particularly enjoy the color scheme and vibes. But still, the landscape looks pretty decent. It has solid style.* Weapon and armor designs - over-retro almost always looks great.* Some ambient music is pretty. Not super interesting or very unique. But decent.* Some characters are not that cardboard and stupid. I especially loved Parvati, a gasp of fresh air in the sea of brainwashed people talking corporate slogans.* Interactions with your current companion in dialogs - great idea and implementation. You talk to someone and then your companion adds something or you can ask his something.* Lots of gameplay settings. I love when there are many custom difficulty options like turning off crosshair, item outlines and so on.What I am neutral about:* The plot. I heard maybe too much about the insanely over-the-top capitalism criticism. But decided to try the game anyway.* Dialogue and skill system. Not good and not bad, just standard. Seen this many times. And Fallout is better. What I hate and is pissed about:* The combat system. Enemies have too much health. Movement is janky as hell. Started with melee / heavy weapon build. Melee is slow and painful, like you are constantly in the liquid. Dodging / dashing doesn't work properly if you are running. Bullet time is very short, and you are also slow - doesn't help at all. First enemies are hell. After getting some loot and weapons it becomes better but not so much. Heavy weapons are a bit better but still the combat could be much better. I just finished 200 hours of Cyberpunk 2077 and the contrast between the two combat systems literally hurts me.* The graphics are VERY poor for a 2019 game. Motion blur looks awful but without it the game actually works worse. Draw distance is pathetic. Some very rare micro stutters but not like in Bethesda games. NPC animations are very bad, especially for the animals. Playing on a fresh PC with fast M.2 SSDs, 4080 SUPER, 9900X, 64Gb RAM. Oh, and the colors make things indistinguishable from each other. Enemies, corpses, items, decorations. With outlines turned off for hardcore it's hard so I turned them on again.* Face animations are just uncanny and one of the worst. Silent Hill 3 still has better face animations. Hell, even Fallout 4 has better looking faces. Sometimes the NPC face looks like it is not connected to the actual body, I can't explain the feeling. Like the face is animated completely separately.* Companion system is quite annoying. You can't leave companion somewhere permanently so that he doesn't die permanently on supernova! Even if you tell him to stand somewhere he can still trigger and enter the combat. I got constant Dogmeat vibes from Fallout 1 / 2, he just died EVERY DAMN TIME. And what pissed me off completely - you can't unequip companion's armor or helmet! Only swap to something else. Yes, you can turn helmet display off in options, but it's still equipped. What the actual? Why did you do it? Who approved it?* Inventory and profile management is a mess. Played on a gamepad. Some things are not very intuitive. Lots of icons and text, lots of tooltips, lots of badly designed radial command menus, everything works differently in every menu. In some menus D-pad works differently from the left stick, in some of them they work identical. Just bad.* You need to constantly hold buttons for too much time. Use consumables, transition to locations, disassemble items, lockpick doors and crates and so on. Some games even have accessibility options to disable such things. But they almost praise very long timeouts here.* Stupid lockpicking. Don't have enough picks? Sorry, bro, don't have a chance. Used consumable - suddenly you have enough. No minigame, no challenge, only frustration.* Loading screens. Constant loading screens. Bethesda... sorry, Obsidian never changes. And frustrating autosaves BEFORE loading screens, not after. On supernova difficulty manual saves are INSIDE the ship only. So, you enter the ship by holding X for a long time. You save. You exit the ship by holding X for a long time. You die or Parvati dies. You load the game. You exit the ship by holding the X for a long time... Same with autosaves near city gates. Load game - exit the city AGAIN AND AGAIN. It's a waste of my precious life time, dammit!* Bugs everywhere. Jump on something and get stuck until you try to dodge or jump for several seconds. Open journal by the button hold (not from the inventory) - the text field doesn't scroll, change the screen and return again. Some corpses just disappear randomly. Nothing fixed and the bugs are obvious. After ten hours I rage quit because Parvati died again even after I told her to stand her ground far away. This game is a constant waste of time, literally! With all these button holds and loading screens and companion deaths. The graphics strain my eyes and look bad. I didn't even expect so many infuriating things in one game. It almost seems like Obsidian were never good and we were all fooled by the New Vegas success. It was a game with flaws and bugs. But damn it was good and complex. With much more satisfying plot, combat and movement. Can't recommend The Outer Worlds. Waste of quite a lot of money for me and no ability to refund. The purchase was long time ago. I'm glad I didn't buy the second game because it's now unavailable in Russia.
